shattered rock and brick, wire, balsa wood, rubber bands
A mobile made up pieces of rock, balsa wood, and wire, hanging at different elevations.
I first participated in huge wall-sized drawings with the class, where we explored gestural expressions of water, fire, earth, air (and the cosmos). We were then told to make a sculpture echoing small sections of the drawings. How have subjective “biological truths” been used to impose binaries? I feel this way about the ways in which the 5 elements of our drawing prompt were picked out. Ancient Greek philosophers have conceived of these 4-5 elements, and now, in our modern time, similar conceptions of subjective/ constructed biological truths are being used to controls gender binaries. The world is fluid, morphing, and transitioning between its elemental truths at all times. To make this piece, I first found a rock outside, shattered it, and attempted to give it the impossible qualities of air. I was challenged to use a select few materials for the work, and had the choice of one additional material of my choice.
