Silver Platter Pleasure

2¾’ x 1’ x 6”
plastic banana, metal plate, flannel pajama pants, light switches, found note
A topless person wearing flannel pajama pants and a silver platter. Placed on their crotch is a lightswitch. On the silver platter is a plastic banana, in which a lightswitch is embedded. In the backpocket is a found love note.
This piece is a reflection on the queer sex pleasure puzzle, specifically inspired by my experience as a nonbinary butch lesbian. Where is the phallus (who wears the pants)? Here, it is detachable and disconnected, removed from the individual’s physical pleasure. Patriarchal power dynamics are not centered to my life, but it is difficult still to rid oneself of how they shape relationships and sex. The phallus is in conversation with the individual’s genitalia, as both need to be manually operated with the lightswitch to synchronize. Here, pleasure is a puzzle. Non-conforming gender roles entail rediscovering sexual and romantic roles. This piece stands in that embarassement, but also in that excitement.
