wood, found bike parts, found metal bench part, glass bottles, wind-chimes
This piece is an outdoor bench designed to be sat on by 1-6 people at a time.
Inside each armrest is a bike wheel that can be spun by the sitter using the pedal.
On the inside of the bench, are glass bottles and windchimes, that create music
from the wind and from the vibrations of the bike wheels and the sitters.
My concept from the beginning was to deepen connections, and to create a chair
that could transfer energies, especially mechanical and sonic energies. In the end,
I didn’t stray too far from this. Similarly to my in-the-moment, unexpected art
process, the abandoned objects I encountered in my day-to-day were crucial in the
design of my piece: specifically two abandoned bikes and a green decorative piece
from a dilapidated bench. My final bench is a place where physical and sonic energies
transform into social power and community. As people spin the wheels of the bikes,
the bench vibrates, and all the sitters are united in the physical feeling of the
bench, and can work together to create music through these vibrations. As the wind
blows, the windchimes and glass bottles also create noise, and the sitters can tap
into the surrounding forces around them. In the end, this bench is a creative exercise
for people and their surroundings to engage in, and to feel closer to each other as a
result. It is a bench for conversation, to unite the restless who have trouble staying
still, and the meditative who enjoy listening and learning to their surroundings, to
find each other and to exchange ways of being.
