A dual-spinning double decker stand, on which various percussion instruments are hanging or are attached. Surrounding the stand is a 16-sided wooden frame. To the side in a container are 16 elongated drumsticks of different lengths.
Inspired by Zimoun’s large sound installations, where he repeats small mechanisms over and over into a large noisy installation , I chose to create a similar pairing, but replaced all motorized processes with people! I was very interested in carving out a balance between competition and collaboration that would lend itself to the most chaos and excitement. I also found inspiration in a variety of non-artistic games and devices (Fooseball tables, tandem bikes, Tetherball), as well as my own musical practice as a drummer, and my visit to the the Anarchestra instrument library. With this piece, my goal is to motivate individuals to connect to each other in a way that goes beyond words, in a collaborative creative experience where they are strangely connected into reveling in a obnoxious cacophony of their own creation. With this piece, each performance is forcibly totally improvised, is completely unique, and resists any skill barriers towards musical playing (no time signatures, tempo, or scale can be adhered to). The point is to foreground connection and creativity, and to put art- making processes first over any final aesthetic output.
